    Walt Whitman wrote

O highway I travel! O public road! do you say to me, Do not leave me?
Do you say, Venture not? If you leave me, you are lost?
Do you say, I am already prepared—I am well-beaten and undenied—adhere to me?

I think it means stay on the straight and narrow stay on the well trod path and do not venture into the unknown.. was Walt at crossroads in his life when he wrote that?

I love the image… happy yaks with not too big a load cooling their feet.

I think he loves the open road. Loves being on the move. The road doesn’t judge him , or try to possess him, and every step of it is poetry, more so than his own poems.

This quote I pinched from Bruce Chatwin’s Songlines. A quote that inspired his nomadism. And since his book is about nomads and travellers , it makes me think of it in the way i explained above.

I had a casual job one day in Brisbane where I had to sit beside a public road and count traffic with a little clicker.I had to count who turned left and right and who went straight ahead. I stuffed it up tho cos the left hand road had two exits, one into a carpark I didn’t realise was there till about midday. I could have kept quiet and kept my job but i confessed. They didn’t ask me back the next day. I was sad because me and that little bit of public road got to know each other really well.
